VK Commodore dash upgrade options: restore the factory cluster, RetroTech 623/62D gauge kits, 62X/65X bare shells, or a full digital display

VK Commodore Dash Options: Factory, Analogue Upgrades, Digital Dashes and the Calais

The VK Commodore (1984–1986) is one of the most popular early Commodores to restore, modify and LS-swap, and the dash is usually one of the first things owners want to change. Factory gauges are now 40 years old, sender readings drift, and once you change the engine the original cluster often can't show you what you need to know.

This guide explains the factory VK dash setups, then walks through the main upgrade paths so you can pick the right one for your car.

The factory VK dash: SL and Berlina vs Calais

Before you buy anything, check which cluster your VK has:

  • SL, Executive and Berlina – a conventional analogue instrument cluster with needle gauges, and an indicator/warning light panel on the left-hand side. Most upgrade kits, including ours, are made to replace this cluster.
  • Calais – the VK Calais came with an electronic digital dash, often nicknamed the "Star Wars" dash. It has a different housing and mounting, so kits made for the SL/Berlina cluster won't fit a Calais without changes.

Not sure what you've got? Our VB–VK dash kit fitment guide shows how to tell the clusters apart.

Your main VK dash upgrade options

1. Keep and restore the factory cluster

If you're after a concours-style restoration, restoring the original cluster keeps the car original. Expect to deal with tired senders, faded faces and cracked lenses, and remember the factory gauges won't suit a modern engine swap.

2. A complete gauge dash kit (factory look, modern gauges)

A complete kit replaces the factory cluster with a new panel carrying modern aftermarket gauges, while keeping the classic layout. This is the most popular route for street cars and LS conversions, because you get accurate gauges with warning functions without the dash looking out of place.

Our RetroTech VK kits are designed and made in Australia to fit the factory cluster location with no cutting. They come with SAAS gauges pre-installed:

Both retain your VK's left-side indicator panel and its backlighting, as per OEM. You re-use the indicator panel, rear indicator PCB and lower mounting bracket from your old cluster, and you choose the variant that matches your car's switch options (SL or Berlina, sedan or wagon). Some wiring is required. The kits don't simply plug into the factory loom, but full instructions are included and we answer every question ourselves.

3. A bare shell for your own gauges

Already have gauges, or want a different gauge brand? A bare shell gives you the factory-fit panel without gauges fitted:

  • 62X bare chassis – the VK panel without gauges, in the same switch-option variants as the complete kits.
  • 65X bare dash kit – made for 85 mm and 52 mm gauges.

Check each product page for the gauge sizes and the factory parts you re-use.

4. A full digital display dash

If your VK runs an aftermarket ECU, a digital display (such as a Haltech, MoTeC or Powertune screen) in a VK cluster mount can show every engine reading, alarms and data logging on one screen. It's the most capable option, but also the most expensive once you add the display, and it suits race and heavily modified cars more than a classic street look.

FAQ

Will a VK dash kit fit a VK Calais?

Not our RetroTech VK kits. They're made for the SL, Executive and Berlina analogue cluster. The Calais digital dash uses a different housing.

Do VK dash kits fit a VB, VC or VH?

No. The VK cluster is different. See our VB, VC and VH dash kits.

Do I keep the factory indicator panel?

Yes. Our VK kits keep the left-side indicator panel and its backlighting.

Is it a plug-and-play install?

No. Some wiring is needed. If you're comfortable with basic auto wiring it's a DIY job, otherwise an auto electrician can fit it.

How long does a kit take?

Our dash kits are made to order and usually dispatch within 5–10 business days. Check the product page for any current notices.
