Sloppy, vague or notchy gear lever in your MX-5 / Miata? Hunting for 1st and 2nd, or the lever wandering towards reverse? Over time the plastic shift gate plate and the shifter bushes wear, leaving play in the lever and a vague gate. This kit puts it all back to factory-fresh with 100% genuine Mazda parts, sourced by us in Japan.

🇯🇵 Ships from Japan: this kit is posted direct from our base in Japan, not from our Australian stock. Shipping is free Australia-wide (tracked Japan Post airmail), but please allow 1–3 weeks for delivery, which is longer than our Australian-made parts. If you order it with other items, they may arrive separately.

What's in the kit

  • 1 × Shift gate / lock-out plate (Mazda P601-17-449A, listed by Mazda as "cover"): the hard plastic plate on the shifter that limits the lever's side-to-side travel and forms the gate between 1st and reverse. It's the most common cause of a sloppy, vague NC 6-speed shift.
  • 2 × Shift lever ball bush (Mazda M501-17-515): the white nylon pivot bushes either side of the lever ball
  • 1 × Change bush (Mazda P611-17-492): the black bush on the lower pivot ball of the shift lever (Oiles-made)

All parts are new, genuine Mazda, made in Japan and supplied in their original Mazda packaging.

Fitment

  • Mazda MX-5 / Miata NC1 (2005–2008), NC2 (late 2008–2012) and NC3 (2012–2015), 6-speed manual
  • Japanese-market Mazda Roadster (NCEC) 6-speed manual, including JDM imports
  • Not for 5-speed manual or automatic models

NC1 owners please note: Mazda updated the lower change bush in February 2008, and P611-17-492 is now Mazda's official replacement for the original NC1 bush (it supersedes P601-17-492B/C, which are no longer made). It's a slightly firmer fit on early NC1 shifters, so expect a tight squeeze when pressing it onto the pivot ball. A little grease and steady pressure gets it home, and the tighter fit means less slop in the lever.

⚠️ You'll also need: gear oil for the shifter turret

The shifter turret has its own oil supply, separate from the gearbox, and it should be topped up or refilled while the shifter is out. Oil is not included.

  • Grade: SAE 75W-90, API GL-4 (look for "GL-4" or "GL-4 Plus" on the label), e.g. Penrite Pro Gear GL-4 75W-90
  • Amount: roughly 150–200 ml. Fill to the level of the selector cup, not above it. A 1 L bottle is plenty and leaves spare for a gearbox top-up.
  • Lightly grease the lever ball and the gate plate's left and right contact points with lithium grease on reassembly.

Why buy from us?

  • Genuine Mazda, not aftermarket. Big-box auto stores don't stock these parts.
  • All the parts you need in one box, so there's no chasing individual part numbers through a dealer and waiting weeks for back orders.
  • Free shipping Australia-wide, tracked from Japan to your door. New Zealand shipping is calculated at checkout.
  • We're NC owners ourselves and run these parts in our own cars.

Fitting the kit means removing the centre console and the shifter assembly (three 10 mm bolts). It's a straightforward DIY job for most home mechanics, but if in doubt have it fitted by a qualified mechanic.
