A cracked or sticky original wheel is one of the first things owners want to replace on a classic Holden, and a period-correct aftermarket wheel transforms the interior. To fit one safely and keep the horn and indicator cancelling working, you need the right boss kit (also called a hub adaptor) and a matching horn contact.
What a boss kit does
The boss kit bolts to your steering column spline and gives you a standard bolt pattern for the aftermarket wheel. A good kit also:
- keeps the wheel at the factory height, so it isn't pushed closer to your chest
- carries the cam that cancels your indicators after a turn
- holds the horn contact so the horn still works.
Which boss kit fits my Holden?
The SAAS BK24L boss kit suits:
- Commodore: VB, VC, VH (1980–1984)
- HQ–WB: HQ, HJ, HX, HZ, WB, including Monaro HQ–HX and Statesman WB (1971–1985)
- Torana: LJ, LH, LX, UC, TA (1972–1983)
It takes 6-bolt wheels on the SAAS, MOMO and Nardi pattern (70/74 mm PCD), suits flat-spoke wheels and keeps the factory steering height.
VK Commodore? VKs use a different setup depending on the wheel fitted. Message us with your model before ordering.
Don't forget the horn contact
The original horn contacts on these cars are plastic and now 40–50 years old. They crack, wear out and stop the horn or the indicator cancelling from working. The SAAS HC1000 horn contact is an injection-moulded replacement (not 3D printed) that suits SAAS boss kits and selected original Holden wheels:
- VB, VC, VH Commodore
- HQ, HJ, HX, HZ, WB (except single-spoke wheels)
- VK (except single-spoke wheels, which use the HC1001).
If your horn or indicator cancelling has stopped working, a broken horn contact is a likely cause even with the original wheel.
Choosing a wheel
- Diameter: smaller wheels feel sportier but steer heavier without power steering. A 14" (350 mm) wheel is a popular balance on classic Holdens.
- Dish: flat or shallow-dish wheels sit closer to the factory position. Deep-dish wheels bring the rim towards you.
- Style: the SAAS Director 14" leather wheel recreates the 80s HDT look that suits VB–VK Commodores perfectly.
What does ADR approved mean?
Australian Design Rules set the safety standards for vehicle components. An ADR-compliant wheel, like the SAAS Director, has been made to meet those standards for use on Australian roads. Rules on modifications vary between states, so check your state's requirements if your car is registered on club or historic plates.
Airbag-equipped cars: removing a steering wheel airbag is a different matter and is generally not allowed for road use. The boss kits here are for older, non-airbag Holdens.
Installation overview
- Disconnect the battery.
- Remove the horn pad and steering wheel nut, then use a puller to remove the original wheel. Don't hammer the column.
- Fit the boss kit with the wheels pointing straight ahead and the indicator cancelling cam correctly aligned.
- Fit the horn contact and wiring as per the boss kit instructions.
- Bolt on the wheel, tighten to spec and test the horn and indicator cancelling before driving.
