Open the bonnet on most HQ–WB Holdens and LH–LX Toranas and you'll see the same tired bits: a yellowed, cracked plastic washer bottle, a mismatched coolant overflow and a tangle of old hose clamps. They're small parts, but replacing them makes a big difference to how the engine bay looks and how reliable the car is.
1. Replace the washer bottle
Original plastic washer bottles go brittle after decades of engine heat. Cracks leak washer fluid onto wiring and the bottle never looks clean again.
The SAAS black alloy washer bottle is a direct replacement:
- Fits HQ–WB (1971–1984), including Belmont, Kingswood, Premier, Monaro, GTS and Statesman, and LH/LX Torana (1974–1978).
- Has welded brackets that bolt into the factory mounting location.
- Holds 1.5 litres, with a black powder-coated finish and a knurled billet cap.
Tip: reuse or replace the washer pump grommet and check the pump while you're there. Old pumps are a common cause of weak washers.
2. Upgrade the coolant overflow tank
A coolant overflow (recovery) tank catches coolant as it expands when hot and lets it be drawn back as the engine cools. Without one, or with a cracked one, you lose coolant and draw in air.
The billet aluminium 700 ml overflow tank is a universal unit that suits many builds, including engine swaps where the factory tank no longer fits:
- Machined from 6061 aluminium, 180 mm tall and 80 mm in diameter.
- Two 6 mm fittings, with a mounting kit included.
- Its compact size fits tight engine bays, including LS swaps.
Mount it so the tank sits at or above the radiator cap height where possible, and keep it away from exhaust heat.
3. Tidy up the hose clamps
Old worm-drive clamps rust, bite into hoses and look messy. On silicone hoses, especially intercooler and intake pipes on forced induction builds, dual-bead stainless clamps grip better and look far tidier. Don't over-tighten clamps on silicone. Snug them up and re-check after the first heat cycles.
4. Add a temperature sender the clean way
Fitting aftermarket gauges? An inline radiator hose adaptor lets you add a water temperature sender without drilling or tapping the engine, and the black finish suits a detailed bay. See our gauge installation guide.
5. Finishing details
- Wrap or sleeve exposed wiring and tie it along existing looms.
- Replace perished vacuum and heater hoses while you're in there.
- Clean and repaint brackets before bolting new parts on. Black satin is period-correct and easy to keep clean.
FAQ
Does the washer bottle fit a Monaro or Statesman?
Yes. HQ–HX Monaros and HQ–WB Statesmans are on the fitment list.
Will the overflow tank fit my Commodore?
It's universal, so it can suit many cars. Check the space you have against its 180 × 80 mm size before ordering.
