The original instrument clusters in VB to VK Commodores are now 40+ years old. Gauges fail, circuit boards crack and good second-hand clusters are getting hard to find. Our RetroTech Classic dash kits replace the whole cluster with a new, Australian-made chassis that bolts into the factory location and runs modern SAAS gauges.
There are two things to decide: which car you have, and whether you want a complete kit or a bare chassis.
Step 1: VB/VC/VH or VK?
The VB, VC and VH share one cluster design and the VK uses another, so the kits are different.
- VB, VC, VH Commodore (1978–1984): 603, 60D, 60X and 63X
- VK Commodore: 623, 62D, 62X and 65X. These suit VK SL and Berlina models, not the VK Calais. The VK kits retain your factory left-side indicator panel and its backlighting, so you re-use the indicator panel, rear indicator PCB and lower mounting bracket from your old cluster.
Step 2: complete kit or bare chassis?
Complete kits (603, 60D, 623, 62D)
These come with SAAS gauges already installed and fully pre-wired with Deutsch DT connectors. They include the chassis, gauge plate, fasteners and wiring. The dash is a direct bolt-in with no cutting or drilling, although some wiring changes are needed and instructions are supplied.
- 603 and 623 use SAAS Muscle Series 3 gauges – a classic analogue needle with a digital display.
- 60D and 62D use SAAS Muscle Digital gauges – a fully digital readout.
Bare chassis (60X, 62X, 63X, 65X)
For builders who already have gauges, or want a particular brand. You get the new chassis, gauge plate, fascia and hardware, and fit your own gauges and pilot lights.
- 60X (VB/VC/VH) and 62X (VK) – the original bare chassis, optimised for SAAS gauges. The 60X takes 52mm and 80mm gauges and most 14mm pilot lights, with an optional billet pilot light set. Check each product page for supported gauge sizes.
- 63X (VB/VC/VH) and 65X (VK) – a front-mounted design for 85mm speedo and tacho plus 52mm auxiliary gauges, so they suit most aftermarket brands such as Autometer and Holley. The 63X has provision for eight 14mm pilot lights.
Gauge sizes and depths vary between brands, so measure your gauges before ordering a bare chassis. If yours are unusual, contact us – we can often adjust the design to suit.
Step 3: sort out your speedo signal
SAAS speedometers need an electronic speed signal. If your gearbox only has a mechanical speedo cable, choose either the SAAS GPS speed sensor or our ESA-01 speedometer converter. See our guide to GPS sensor vs ESA-01 for the differences.
