A garage keeps the weather off, but it doesn't stop dust, curious pets, bikes being leaned against the guards or the odd bump from someone squeezing past. A good indoor car cover is cheap insurance for paint you've spent years and thousands of dollars on.
Indoor vs outdoor covers
Indoor covers are made to be soft, breathable and dust-proof. They aren't waterproof and they won't stand up to UV, rain or wind. If your car lives outdoors, you need a dedicated outdoor cover. Never use an indoor cover outside.
How to measure your car
- Measure the overall length from the front of the bumper to the rear of the bumper with a tape measure, at the widest point of the body.
- Note anything that adds length or height: tow bars, rear wings, roof racks, bull bars or a lowered stance.
- Compare your measurement with the cover's size range.
Don't guess from memory. Manufacturer length figures vary between body styles and bumper options, and a cover that's too small is a pain to fit, while one that's far too big flaps and collects dust underneath.
Our SAAS indoor cover sizes
| Cover | Suits cars about |
|---|---|
| Classic Ultra 4-way stretch (black) | 4.40–4.70 m |
| Classic Ultra 4-way stretch (black) | 4.90–5.30 m |
| Indoor Classic Medium with stripes | about 4.5 m |
| Indoor Classic Large with stripes | about 5.0 m |
Between sizes? A 4-way stretch cover forgives small differences because the fabric conforms to the body. Send us your measurement and model if you're unsure.
Stretch vs standard covers
- 4-way stretch: hugs every curve for a tailored, show-car look, packs down small and is easy to handle. Great for cars that come out for shows.
- Standard fitted covers: a looser fit with classic styling, such as the striped muscle-car look. Good value for long-term storage.
Protect your paint: what not to do
- Don't cover a dirty car. Dust and grit under a cover act like sandpaper. Wash or at least dust the car first.
- Don't cover a wet or hot car. Let it dry and cool so moisture doesn't get trapped.
- Fit from front to back. Roll the cover on and off rather than dragging it across the paint.
- Keep the cover clean. Store it in its bag and follow the washing instructions.
Long-term storage tips
- Fit a battery maintainer, or disconnect the battery.
- Top up the fuel tank and add a fuel stabiliser if the car will sit for months.
- Pump the tyres up to the correct pressure, and move the car occasionally to prevent flat spots.
- Leave a window very slightly open, or use moisture absorbers in humid climates.
FAQ
Will an indoor cover stop dents?
It helps against light scuffs and dust, but it isn't padded protection against impacts.
Do covers suit lowered or modified cars?
Yes. Stretch covers in particular suit lowered cars and body kits well. Measure the car as it sits.
