If your NC MX-5 / Miata 6-speed has a vague gate, you hunt for 1st and 2nd, the lever drifts towards reverse, or there's slop in every gear, the cause is usually wear in the shifter assembly, not the gearbox itself. The good news: the parts are cheap, it's a 20–30 minute job, and genuine Mazda parts are still available.
The parts that wear
| Part | Mazda part number | Qty | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shift gate / lock-out plate (Mazda calls it "cover") | P601-17-449A | 1 | Hard plastic plate that limits side-to-side travel and forms the 1st/reverse gate. The most common cause of a vague shift. |
| Shift lever ball bush | M501-17-515 | 2 | White nylon pivot bushes either side of the lever ball. |
| Change bush | P611-17-492 | 1 | Black bush on the lower pivot ball of the shift lever. |
NC1, NC2 or NC3: which bush do I need?
Mazda's parts catalogue shows the lower change bush was updated on 1 February 2008. The original NC1 bush (P601-17-492B, then -492C) was superseded by P611-17-492, which is now Mazda's official replacement for every NC 6-speed, NC1 included. On early NC1 shifters it's a firmer fit, so expect a tight squeeze pressing it onto the ball. A little grease and steady pressure gets it on, and the tighter fit means less slop.
Turret oil: grade and amount
The NC 6-speed shifter turret has its own oil, separate from the gearbox. While the shifter is out, top it up or refill it:
- Grade: SAE 75W-90, API GL-4 (GL-4 Plus is fine), e.g. Penrite Pro Gear GL-4 75W-90
- Amount: roughly 150–200 ml, filled to the level of the selector cup, not above
- Lightly grease the lever ball and the gate plate's left and right contact points with lithium grease
Fitting overview
- Remove the centre console trim, gear knob and gaiter.
- Undo the three 10 mm bolts holding the shifter assembly and lift it out.
- Check and top up the turret oil.
- Fit the new gate plate, ball bushes and change bush.
- Grease the contact points, refit the assembly and reassemble the console.
Owners on the MX-5 Owners Club forum report that refilling the turret oil and greasing the ball makes the biggest difference, and that a new gate plate sharpens the change further.

FAQ
Does this fit the 5-speed NC?
No. These are 6-speed parts.
Does it fit the ND MX-5?
No. The ND uses a different shifter.
Do I need special tools?
No. A 10 mm socket, a trim tool and something to pump oil into the turret are enough.
